I had the worst headache of my life, but it turned out to be much worse than that. I was rushed by Air Care to University Hospital and diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. During surgery, I had a stroke – and survived, and spent the next 35 days in the intensive care unit. Even though I was only in my late-30s, the stroke had taken its toll, causing total paralysis on my left side and other deficits. I couldn’t even sit up in my wheel chair.

I was discharged to Drake where I began a long, but steady, road to recovery. I took advantage of every possible service: long-term acute care, transitional/skilled nursing, stroke recovery, occupational/physical/speech therapy, assisted living, research studies, pain relief, neuropsycology, and exercise classes. Today I’m proud to say I’m living indendently in my own home, but I return to Drake three times a week to exercise in their wellness program.
